Scottish Canals

Biography

Welcome aboard!
Get ready to discover Scotland’s beautiful canals.

Scottish Canals does what you’d expect – we manage and maintain Scotland’s historic 141-mile canal network. What is less known is that Scottish Canals also contributes to Scotland’s water management, climate change mitigation, economic, ecological, social and housing targets.

We manage, maintain and operate five major canals and associated waterways, including: the locks, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts and other structures along these waterways as well as the surrounding towpaths, visitor facilities and heritage sites. We need to make sure that the network is accessible for all users, including boaters, cyclists, walkers and wildlife.

As well as the management and development of five Scottish canals, we care for bridges, buildings, locks, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and 19 water supply reservoirs in locations across Scotland. We work across a range of projects covering a range of different initiatives to improve safety, develop new spaces, innovation and engage with our communities.
