Through adventure in the wild, they discover it.
We take young people beyond the classroom, beyond their everyday lives, and into extraordinary experiences that build confidence, compassion, and self-belief. Working with schools, employers and youth groups, we use adventure to teach the most important lesson: they are stronger than they think.
And potential shouldn’t depend on income. We fund over 80% of participants to ensure no one is left behind.
Our history
Built for challenge, born to empower
Outward Bound was founded during the Second World War, not in a classroom but on a storm-lashed Welsh coastline. The goal was urgent and clear: help young merchant seamen survive the Atlantic. Build their confidence. Strengthen their resilience. Teach them how to lead.
It worked. And it sparked something bigger.
A new kind of education
Our co-founder, the educator Kurt Hahn, believed that young people learn best through challenge - real challenge - in the wild, with purpose. His philosophy: education for life, not just for exams, still runs through everything we do today.
The first Outward Bound course ran in 1941 at Aberdyfi (Snowdonia). It combined physical challenge with reflection, teamwork, and leadership. That course shaped a generation and laid the foundations for a movement.
Expanding across the UK
As the need for this kind of education grew, so did Outward Bound. We opened Centres in the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, and beyond. Always remote, always rugged, always chosen for their power to inspire.
From school students to apprentices, from those on the edge to those stepping up, our courses have helped generations of young people discover who they are - and who they could become.
A charity with a purpose
Since 1946, The Outward Bound Trust has existed as a charity. That status matters. It means we put young people, not profit, first. We work hard to remove barriers so that the power of the outdoors is open to all, not just those who can afford it.
Every bursary we give, every mountain climbed, every moment of breakthrough is part of a bigger mission: to help young people thrive.
Over 80 years on and still making a difference
Today, the world is different, but young people still need space to grow, be challenged, connect, and realise they can do more than they thought.
That’s why Outward Bound still matters. And why our history is only just getting started.
