Outdoor Education Senior Instructor at Orkney Islands Council

37 hours per week

Temporary up to 31 March 2026

£34,728 - £37,429 / £18.00 - £19.40 per hour (including Distant Islands Allowance)

An Outdoor Education Senior Instructor is being sought to provide quality outdoor education instruction and outdoor learning as a Senior Instructor within an island-based community working with a range of schools / local environments in conjunction with Education, youth work, charities, and community groups within Orkney.

You should have a qualification at SCQF 6/7, or have a minimum of 3 years previous knowledge, experience, and ability in leading, instructing and coaching a broad range of land, water and centre based outdoor adventure activities at a senior instructor level within a residential outdoor centre or outdoor learning provision.

It is essential to provide proven evidence of assessed qualifications or awards (with up to date CPD training where applicable) within each of the 6 outdoor activity areas:

• Walking and Camping

• Climbing and Rope Based Activity

• Centre Based Activity

• Coasteering and Water Safety

• Paddle-Sports

• Other Awards and Qualifications

The successful applicant will be in a leadership position to support and develop Orkney’s Outdoor Education and Learning programme within the local community.

You will offer suitable and professional support, advice, and holistic care to pupils and participants taking part in outdoor learning who may have additional support, physical assistance, learning and development needs, challenging behaviour or are vulnerable within the community.

You will be required to offer focused outdoor activity opportunities to outer island schools, youth clubs, local charities and community groups, which may involve time away using overnight accommodation on outer islands and using ferry transport as part of the work commitment.

You should have a full current Driving Licence including D1+E to meet the operational requirement to drive a minibus and tow trailers.
