This group is made up of members who are engaged in, or have an interest in delivering Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning and Field Studies. Many members are based at outdoor learning centres, but we also welcome members who are working in schools or other education settings and who are keen to incorporate Outdoor Learning in their everyday teaching practice.
What is Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning?
Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning (CBOL) is the practice of delivering curriculum content in an outdoor environment. This includes Field Studies (typically associated with the Geography and Biology Curriculum) and Environmental Education, but can also include activities linked to all other curriculum subjects. Children can learn about the history of art by exploring natural pigments found in their environment, practice using coordinates by going on a treasure hunt or gain confidence in literacy by writing poems inspired by a walk in a local open space… The possibilities are unlimited!
Aims

To provide one point of contact for IOL members on all aspects of Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning and fieldwork.

To disseminate good practice in Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning and fieldwork.

To provide support for IOL members who are non-specialists who are undertaking Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning and fieldwork.

To promote the benefits of Curriculum Based Outdoor Learning and fieldwork to higher authorities, e.g. exam boards.
