Sighted Volunteers Required -
for the MCofS Visually Impaired Course 2008
Hosted by Glenmore Lodge - September 15th – 19th
- The 9th MCofS VI Course will again be held at Glenmore Lodge this year, with the Lodge taking responsibility for administration and applications. Norma Davidson, partially sighted herself and one of the original participants, is now the coordinator for the event. This year 8 visually impaired people will be offered places on this week-long course to experience a range of outdoor activities. These usually include walking in the Cairngorms, Canadian canoeing on the Spey, an overnight camp or bothy (often with musical accompaniment) and climbing at Cummingston sea cliffs.
- The degree of sight impairment of the participants varies, but in order to get the most from the week, sighted volunteers are required to assist them on a daily basis whilst on the activity itself.
- They are looking for anyone willing to help in this way. There is a cost of £75 to cover full board. The week’s activity may appeal to anyone undertaking their MLT Awards who wish to gain experience for their logbook, or anyone wishing to enjoy helping people experience something very different.

Scottish Conservatives call for all teenagers to be given the right to outdoor education.
- The Scottish Conservatives have called for all teenagers to be given the right to outdoor education, such as climbing, hiking, sailing and abseiling. They want pupils between the age of 11 and 15 to have access to a one-week residential course. The Tories say 53,000 youngsters a year would be eligible - and the £8.5m it would cost could come from government and private donors. Teachers' leaders said there would be a risk of accidents and legal action. Early signs suggest the scheme may win cross-party support. Read more here. See the BBC Video here.
