AAIAC Research into the Accreditation of
Adventure Activities - UPDATE

You may be aware that the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee (AAIAC) has commissioned a project to research existing schemes of non-statutory (see: http://www.outdoor-learning.org/news/aaiac_research.htm)
(ie not AALA) adventure activity accreditation that currently exist within the UK, and to identify the core elements of these schemes and how they operate. This project is being conducted by Adventure Activity Associates Ltd, or "3A's" (a small outdoor consultancy, principally comprising Bob Barton, Iain Peter and Malcolm Campbell) and is being funded by SkillsActive. You may have already seen a short article published by the IOL outlining the project.

Once the well-known existing schemes have been researched (which is the stage that the project has currently reached) 3A's are to identify those areas of the sector where no schemes exists ('black holes'!), as well as estimating what proportion of providers could be members of relevant existing schemes, but choose not to be.

Once the information has been gathered and processed, 3A's are to advise the AAIAC on the feasibility of an integrated non-statutory scheme to complement Licensing, and to provide signposts suggesting ways in which this might be achieved.

However, depending on what we find, there may also be the need to consider how particular areas of provision (the 'black holes') could become 'accredited' within the integrated scheme, either by directing them towards existing schemes, or advising on the establishment of their own.

But before any of this can happen, we first need to identify these gaps in provision, and that is where IOL members, with their extensive coverage of the outdoor and adventurous activity sector, can help. If you or your colleagues are aware of any areas of adventure activity provision that currently have no accreditation schemes that they can sign up to, then please let us know. Just drop me an email, and we'll add the information to the mixing bowl.

And for you're information, there is a list below of existing schemes that we have already considered. - if you know of any others, please let us know.

Thanks very much.
