Professional Development Event 2016

The first Professional Development Event of the IOL Field Studies (NAFSO) Special Interest Group took place on January 2016. The event was based at Lee Valley Youth Hostel, Cheshunt and organised by Karen Wheeler (Lee Valley Country Park) and Chas Matthews (NAFSO), assisted by the NAFSO Exec team.

The National Association of Field Studies Officers elected to become an IOL ‘SIG’ in January of 2015. The 57 PDE participants enjoyed a range of local workshop activities, and keynote speeches from Shaun Dawson (CEO Lee Valley Regional Park Authority) and Jerry Robinson (Operations Director, YHA).

At the ‘SIG’ AGM the existing interim NAFSO/IOL executive committee retired, and a new team was elected. The new Chair is Tom Davis, PGL Study Course Coordinator.

The AGM also saw the retirement of Chas Matthews as NAFSO Chair. Chas was a key member of the group that first established NAFSO some 47 years ago, and has devoted thousands of hours to leading and promoting Field Studies, and supporting those who teach and lead. Chas was presented with a leaving gift by Anthony Thomas OBE on behalf of all NAFSO members and PDE participants.

Tom Davis will lead the new exec. Among their challenges will be to develop the group into a vibrant Professional Practice Group within the IOL organisation, with a new name and new ways of working to support Field Studies.

IOL Field Studies PPG

Field Studies (NAFSO) Group

On April 1st 2015, NAFSO was integrated within the Institute of Outdoor Learning (IOL) as the NAFSO/IOL Field Studies Special Interest Group. The decision to join IOL was approved at the January 2015 Annual General Meeting.

Membership of the Special Interest Group will be available to all existing and all new IOL members.  Full details of how to join has been circulated to existing NAFSO members and to IOL members shortly.  We hope that many existing NAFSO members will wish to join the IOL and the new 'SIG' and take advantage of all that the new arrangements can offer.

As a consequence of this change this existing NAFSO website will be taken down on or about January 31st 2015.  From this date forward news about the new SIG will begin to appear on the IOL website.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to the NAFSO Website over the last few years and we look forward to meeting you again through our new partnership with IOL.

David Etheridge, Vice Chair NAFSO.
